Beth’s Blog

I've been blogging since 2012.

It’s no coincidence that’s less than a year after my second divorce, and what I thought was the end of my goal-oriented life. I write about unifying life experiences—often the stuff people think but don’t say out loud.

You will find posts on both overcoming traumatic events and achieving goals including the following topics:

      • divorce
      • having cancer (leukemia) and a Bone Marrow Transplant
      • mom/daughter dynamics
      • raising a teenager
      • single-parenting
      • dating as an almost 40-year-old (not) virgin
      • Christianity
      • becoming an avid marathoner
      • and empty-nesting.

Oh…and I write a lot about leadership, career development, corporate culture and USING YOUR VOICE in the workplace. #changeyourtone.

It’s Never Too Late to Overcome

I have the privilege of interviewing guests at the mission regularly. Understandably, not everyone who comes through a journey of homelessness wants to share their story. Not everyone is ready. Not everyone is an extroverted proponent of public consumption. You know,...

Leaving a Family Legacy: How One Family Turned Tragedy, Triumph, and Organ Donation Into Saving Lives

What happens when one mother loses her only son in a car accident when he himself was on his way to the funeral of someone he loved? The circle of life is both brutal…and beautiful.

Living Authentically & Making Good Decisions

“Maybe he or she will love me more” more if I just do more. This formula never holds true. It becomes a transactional relationship when you think like this, a way to maintain a false semblance of control. Very often, this way of thinking begins in the church. If I just don’t sin (as much), then God will love me.

International Women’s Day: Choosing to Challenge

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for advancing gender parity. Significant energy is felt worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's...

Forever Changed: Traversing Through Life Together

Recently I was asked to be a recurring freelance writer for a national magazine publication called TransplantNation. There was no way I was saying no to that. None. I am an ardent believer in using our past experiences, particularly the painful ones, to help others...

An Owed to mothers.

I gave it a day. That’s not the first time I’ve had to do that, simmer down, take a day, chill out before speaking. Like I have a choice with the Italian-Irish heritage and its strong but loving feedback. I gave it a day to talk about Mother’s Day and not because I needed to […]

Dear Future Husband

The smell of popcorn wafted through the air as we sat on gray folding chairs. On stage, front and center, was a late-thirties woman I’d never seen before belting out the lyrics to Meghan Trainor’s Dear Future Husband. Lest you fear I have changed even more than previously thought and now enjoy this kind of […]

The Relational Struggle of Defining God

I can’t honestly say exactly when this whole “theology” (theos in Greek = God; ology = study of something) quest began, but here I am. Ah…I am. That’s a tricky little bugger in the Old Testament. It was also a tricky little bugger this morning as I was drinking coffee with my proverbial better half. […]

Choose, sorry.

Today is my birthday. Not the one on my driver’s license, not the one my mom gave birth to me in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1973 (that’s crazy math – don’t do it). Today is the eighteen-year anniversary of my bone marrow transplant; they call it your “birthday” for it is the day you have new […]

People are People

No, I’m not referring to Depeche Mode, but now that I think about it – maybe. If I started to list the things which have gone on for me personally in the last 6 weeks, one of two things would happen:  you’d either think someone stole my login to WordPress and is imposter’ing their way through […]

Why 2016 was actually pretty great

2016 will go down as a year I will never forget.  How could I? While many people will say in retrospect tonight as they are reviewing and pondering the last twelve months that 2016 was one of the worst years ever – from mass shootings, natural disasters, Civil War-esque decisions like North Carolina’s Anti-Transgender Bathroom […]

At One (Ment) at Christmas

Ryan and I were doing some last minute running around for Christmas late afternoon yesterday.  I was driving.  For those of you who have witnessed my driving either sitting shotgun next to me or roadside, in fear, you know this is an area in my life for which I need to practice some serious patience.  […]

Shift Happens

My boss asked me once many years ago why I thought so-and-so who worked for us couldn’t close any business.  He was asking me about a fellow sales cohort who worked out of our Indianapolis office.  For all intents and purposes, Mike – let’s call him Mike since it’s a) commonplace and b) his real […]

The Middle of December

I had a customer meeting yesterday morning and as I was signing in, my pen stopped cold turkey next to “date.” “Is today the fourth?” I asked the receptionist. She looked at me as if there was no way she was going to announce my arrival since I was clearly an idiot with no business […]
